Afghanistan & The Cold War
The Cold War was a war that spanned for about 44 years (1947-1991). This war was a result of the Soviets spreading communism throughout parts of Asia and Europe. Sir. Winston Churchill quoted “From Stettin in the Baltic to Trieste in the Adriatic, an iron curtain has descended across the continent” about the Soviet policies in Europe. When the U.S.S.R was supporting the communist Afghan government while the U.S was supporting the rebel group ‘Mujahideen’ against the government. This war was on for nine years until it resulted in the U.S.S.R stepping out.
This war took place in Afghanistan. Afghanistan is an Islamic Republic in central Asia. It is landlocked and is mountainous and has plains in the north and south west. The official languages in Afghanistan are ‘Pashto’ and ‘Dari’. The area of Afghanistan is 652,864 kilometers squared. It has a population of about 32,564,342 people.
The build up to this conflict in Afghanistan was due to the spread of communism in the region. The government of Afghanistan was supported by the communist U.S.S.R in its fight against the rebel ‘Mujahideen’ group who had the support of the Capitalist U.S.A
The war was four powers in the Afghanistan war they were split into two factions, they were the U.S and the ‘Mujahideen’ for capitalism and the U.S.S.R and the Afghan government for communism.
the afghan pro soviet government committed many crimes against the people of Afghanistan and then requested the help of the USSR to fight against the uprising Mujahideen, the un council took a vote and requested the immediate exit of the soviet forces from Afghanistan. the rebel group mujahideen began to receive great support for the US and neighboring arab monarchies in the Persian gulf.
The soviet troops were invading the cities taking over the main communication, they bombed areas using aerial warfare to the ground and destroy the ‘mujahideen’ rebel forces. In the mid 1980’s the U.S.S.R forces in Afghanistan were about 110,000, but by 1987 the war was starting to cost too much on the U.S.S.R. The last troop was removed in 1988.
The war was considered a part of the cold war due to its length and the concept of communism vs capitalism. It is sometimes referred to as the “bear trap” and in the long term it was helping with the fall of the soviet union.
